This will strictly be my surf rod and reel. I’m very interested in the tsunami saltx 2 4000 but I keep reading mixed reviews on it. Any and all recs would be appreciated as I will do my homework on them. This will be a full summer of surf fishing and I’m trying to be out there everyday till we hit fall. I’m located in San Diego area for fishing reference. Thanks Reddit fam.

We have two Okumas, a 10 foot rockaway and a 10 foot rockaway SP. Between those two we use an okuma inspira 3000 and a diawa Fuego 2500. Both have been fantastic reels for SoCal surf.

  2. Just as a data point, I find my Van Staal VR75 just the tiniest bit undersized and feel like my Stradic 4000 and 5000 are better balanced in my Hawaiian customs. (The van Staal is obviously a different class of durability though). Enjoy the rod! I haven’t found a better one for basic surf fishing in the SF Bay Area yet at the price.

Try a smaller reel for socal like certate 3k, if you’re on the little big island fishing for menpachi you need 4k+ for the cliffs but it also depends what you throwing for.

I’m in north county SD, I use a Penn spinfisher 3500 on mine and I think I could downsize to a 2500-3000 and be fine. I’ve never come close to being spooled and have caught 30″ halibut and striper on it, and a couple big bat rays.
