Brand new rod and reel. I went out this morning and when I felt a nibble, I excitedly tried to set a hook. But the top thing that twists flew off and into the water.
Questions:
1) what is that top part called and is there a way to buy a replacement?
1a) I know that top thing is meant add tension or give to the line when reeling in, is right tightly rule correct?
2) is the mess underneath normal? Do I need untangle that? The guy at the store added the line for me.
3) what would you do to get the reel back to working order?
Thank you so much, I think this is a good learning experience for me but just need some mentorship.

Step 1: Stop reeling
Drag adjustment something or another
Idk the proper name but it’s a drag knob
1a) correct. It controls the rate that the spool can slip and let line out. If you hear it clicking as if it’s pulling drag, try not to reel in until the clicking slows to a near stop. It causes issues down the road
2) not normal. You can try to untangle it but it looks like more headache than it’s worth. Just get some small scissors and go to town
3) cut line, see if you can find a drag knob for your specific reel model on shimanos shop site. If not, maybe eBay. Just make sure you get the model number of the reel before you buy, reassemble with parts and go fish.
Watch a video on YouTube on how to set the drag on a spinning reel. I do it by hand tugging on the line but it’s easy to accidentally get cut doing so
