Do these bait-holding barbs also have to be pinched in places that mandate barbless hooks?

Interesting. I don’t think these would count as a barb, but I’m interested in this as well

they make barbless-baitholder hooks that come without the main barb but still have to two mini-barbs on the shank. check your state’s rule-wording to make sure they aren’t bad.

  3. I wouldn’t even try it. It’s a pain but I wouldn’t chance court over it.

Doesn’t matter what legally would matter. Depends on law enforcement interpretation at the time.

One person could let you go, one person could ticket you. If someone had a large stick up their rectal cavity, they could ticket you because you had a “modified barbed hook.”

As long as you attempt to abide by the law, usually most officers will give you lenience on something small like that.

  5. In my province (BC) these are considered barbs on both provincially managed waters as well as federally managed ones. Our conservation officers would give you a ticket if barbless hooks were mandated where you were fishing.

Just buy barbless hooks. If you pinch the barb down you need to also file it smooth. Ive heard of people getting a ticket because the game warden could feel a bump where the barb was with their finger nail.

Just re-read the provincial angling guide (Manitoba) and found the clarification that I missed when reading it the 1st time: “Barbless hooks may have barbs on the shank for holding bait”.

    Thanks for everyone’s input!
