Got spooled while going on a shark surf fishing trip at Bolsa Chica State Beach two days ago. I was using 50 lb braid albright knotted to a 50 lb monofilament topshot with a 65 lb steel leader for a fish finder rig. What species of fish could have done this?

Coulda been my uncle Tony out in the surf. He’s a beast.
If you didn’t feel much head shake, I’d say a ray. Those puppies run smooth out towards open water. I have had a couple of beach battles with some rays with 40″ + wing spans, white knuckles, wild fights. But if it was a shark? Shoot man your guess is as good as mine. Judging by your rigging, your drag wasn’t loose, probably a big shark if not a ray. Sorry for the lack of specifics, but it’s hard to say. Don’t let it haunt you and keep fishing my friend!
How long did it take it to spool you? If there was no crazy headshakes then it’s possible it was a large ray
