I had the same one, it was never this loud. Not totally silent but pretty quiet compared to what you are experiencing.

Take it back. I have a marineland and a fluval hang on back filter and they are both much quieter. The fluval takes the cake though.

Does the filter self prime? You may need to pour water in the back to get it going, it sounds like it.

  4. Something is in the impeller. Take the impeller out and clean it… that’s normal routine for HOBs.

  5. I have the same filter and the only time it’s ever this loud for me at least is when the lid isn’t seated properly. I know it kinda sounds stupid but I just walk over and move it a little and it quiets down.

Try taking the impeller out and give it a clean before refitting it securely, if it’s slightly loose or dirty it can make a horrible noise.

Also maybe give the filter some time to settle, I often find my filter is noisier after cleaning due to trapped air and sediment. You might find it runs quieter after a day or so.

It’s a dry filter. I take a cup of my tank water and pour it in the filter. Should be good. If that doesn’t fix it you’ll have to take the impeller out. Sometimes just simply touching it while running can fix it immediately.

  8. Hello there! I remember your old filter being much louder than this.sometimes it is noisy on initial startup . Let it run for 24 hours and if it doesn’t improve exchange it. The other users are right. It’s a good practice to add water before hand to eliminate air pockets and prevent pump cavitation. Also, if you can peak inside the filter and you see bubbles coming up, chances are there’s still air.

Use an air hose and sponge filter. I’ve been using them and all of my tanks and I highly recommend them. Much easier care as well.

What is the little red light? I think mine came with it but I didn’t install it?
