This is like the whole argument for wearing motorcycle helmets. You don’t wear these safety devices for all the times you don’t need it. You wear them for when you do.
I also recommend periodically replacing PFD’s, generally if it’s 5-7+ years old it needs replacement.
Back when I paddled professionally, I’d almost go through a PFD a season due to exposure to the elements. Be safe, don’t skimp on your life.

My wife was soloing last week, flipped our kayak, her auto inflate pfd went off. She’s alive. I’m happy.

I took my kayak out for the first time last weekend. On the way back to the dock I had to save this woman who fell off her paddle board in the middle of the lake. No one else was close enough to hear her scream for help. When I got to her (no life jacket) she said her boyfriend fell into the water too. I couldn’t see him. After passing the woman off to the life guard my gf and I looked and waited for a bit but left once the fire department started to arrive to conduct their search. They’re still looking for him.
