After years with a pedal kayak (Jackson Bite FD) I decided it was time to upgrade to a motor. Mainly because a friend's dad sold me a super nice 100ah lifpo battery for $150.

Initial thoughts: Old town has a lot more little nice features. Molded in cup holders, tool holders etc. Fit and finish is very nice. The hull is way taller than my Bite, which explains why it weighs more despite being a foot shorter. It's more stable but not by a ton. Also a slower top speed, but of course it's way easier to hold a sustained 4mph with a motor instead of pedals.

If I had a shuttle, I'd still pick the Bite. But running solo it's going to be the 106 mk for sure. Unless it's really shallow.. I already managed to punch the drive hold down out of the hull. Jackson flex drive has a massive advantage on that front, I've run in to so many rows and it's nice to have the drive just fold up in to the hull.

  1. I have a Hobie PA14 with an XI3, and a bare bones Jackson Bite FD.

The Hobie is a luxury ride, but that Bite is a fish catching machine in it’s own right.

Both have their times and places where they shine.

    Congrats on the new rig.

  2. That the Delaware? I’m thinking about a peddle or motorized kayak, how do they paddle? I ask because I fish some very shallow, smaller water sometimes and I’d like to just paddle. I feel they don’t look maneuverable.
