Did you know bluegill, similar species, and all bass are actually non-native to California? The only one meant to be here lies in this fish which is the only in its genus, though theorized to have split off from rock bass. Since the introduction of other sunfish, this fish has now been pushed out of almost all of its habitats and only really reside in a handful of lakes and ponds around the state being helped by breeding efforts. Ive tried about 12-15 times at this one spot and kept pulling up warmouth and bluegill untill yesterday I finally found one of these.
