What “style/type” of tie down is easiest to use / most reliable?
What type of strap would y’all recommend for tying a kayak to a roof?
I believe the first one is a ratchet strap, but idk what the other two are called… or what’s best.

Just get some Home Depot Husky ratchet straps.
It’s what I use to tie down my pelican 110.

Ratchet straps are reliable. Just buy a good brand. I always double up (or more). Honestly, the best tie down is the one that you can secure successfully and confidently. If you can’t do it right, then it doesn’t matter how strong it is.

You don’t want ratchets, they can apply to much pressure and damage your kayak. The bison tie down straps are the style you want.

You want cam straps, like the ones in the bottom of the first picture.
The reason ratchet straps aren’t recommended is you can overtighten them and crack your kayak.

Cam straps is what they’re called and are preferable over ratchet straps. It’s very easy to over tighten ratchet straps and damage the hull. Cam straps, when used correctly are plenty strong. Don’t neglect bow and stern lines.

Cam straps are the best, ratchet straps have the possibility of over tightening and damaging the hull.
Personally I use some from yak attack, both for car topping and in a truck bed, no issues or complaints at all
I like that their clamps are encased in rubber so you can throw them over the car and not worry about scratching.
They also claim their straps are made out of a material that is more resistant to sun damage, but honestly not sure if that’s really a big deal

The first kind, I call then rachet straps, will be the most secure and strongest, but any of them will work assuming you learn how to use them properly.
I have both kinds and use them both to lift and hold kayaks. In my truck bed I use ratchets for the added security. In my garage I use lashing straps to hoist my kayaks up against the ceiling. They make it easier to slowly lower the kayaks than rachets would.
Some people just hate rachets and cant figure them out so alternatives are popular on Amazon.

Can straps are recommended but I’ve been kayak fishing for 5 years now multiple time per week and have always use ratchet straps because they’re faster. Yes you can over tighten them but just don’t do it lol it’s not that difficult to tighten them tight enough to secure your kayak and not over do it.
