This was my second time on my first kayak. Got him on a 1/4oz mushroom head bass jig. Dude took me for a spin! My heart was pounding!

Now that I’ve taken my “WAL-MART special“ out three times, I’ve learned a few things.

  • You don’t need as much gear as you think

    • the only thing I did to my cheap kayak was add 2 Amazon flush mount rod holders.
    • All I brought was water/gatorade, my 2 rods, paddle, pfd, and the lures that went in my pfd pockets.
  • Wear proper sun protection.

    • 2nd degree burns creep up on you faster than you expect. I’d know….
  • BRING SOMETHING TO DRINK

    • Trying to paddle a mile back to the launch while dehydrated isn’t fun at all.
  • Tether the things you wanna keep.

    • WHEN ,not if, you flip your priority is YOU not your gear. It helps you stay calm and focus on getting back up safely if you know all your things aren’t sinking or floating away. (R.I.P my favorite 32oz water bottle)

Kayak fishing is honestly the most fun thing I’ve done in a long long time. Even if you get skunked it’s still great to be out on the water.

If you’re thinking about trying it, go get the cheap 10ft kayak and get out there, after a few trips you will realize what you do and don’t need from your next kayak a year or so down the road and you’ll have a blast doing it. Also in my opinion, starting out on a cheapo helps you learn balance and paddle technique faster, since the kayak isn’t doing anything to help.

This isn’t to say that if you wanna go for the old town pdl for your first you shouldn’t. All I mean is, don’t let a lack of funds keep you from experiencing it.

TLDR; Just get on the water and have fun, you don’t need a 2k yak or a ton of upgrades. Also please make sure to be safe.
