My grandma moved into a retirement community last week so we had to clean out her garage. She gave me my grandad's old fishing stuff. Most of it was old spincast stuff, but this spinning setup looked interesting. I cleaned it up some and spooled it with braid. Casts pretty well, but the reel needs oiled up good I think. Anyone know what I've got? My guess is that it's from the 80s or early 90s because that's when they fished a lot.

Looks like an old fighting drag Shimano. I have 3 different styles of these reels I really like the fighting drag.

I scored a similar vintage rod and reel out my neighbor’s garage when he passed, and it’s been my most productive combo.

I took it on a number of trips because I’m not worried about losing or breaking it, and I end up using it more often than my newer and nicer set ups.

All it needed was some maintenance and fresh line.

Shimano’s are workhorses. Unused old models typically need just a little oil in the right places and they’ll work fine. I have a new Shimano Vanford and an old Shimano Symetre. After oiling the Symetre the primary difference between the two is not how they operate but the weight. The old one is a lot heavier but works just fine.
