When i reel in toward me the line doesn’t reel in. Rather the mechanism unscrews (see image). When I reel away from me, spinning comes to a dead end and stops tight – however that also doesn’t impact tension on the line. Is this fixable?

Should be a screw knob on the side opposite the handle that literally screws that handle into place. Make sure it is on and tight.
Open the bale and then tie the line to the spool. Then when you turn the handle the bail will close and line will start to go on the spool.
