What do you all use to keep your rods from sinking if they take an unexpected dip? My (4yo) daughter threw hers into the lake on the first cast and now I’m worried about my gear. The “rod buoys” and floats you find at Bass Pro or Amazon look way too bulky for my UL rods (and kiddo rod). Any suggestions or hacks? Also a leash seems messy. Thanks!

Bro go buy a pool noodle from the dollor store. Wtf are you doing?
I’ve purchased sets of these and they work relatively well. They are pretty compact. For UL gear check out Foam Pipe Insulation (1/4” pipe). You can wrap it tighter for a slimmer fit (just be sure to test it with a reel attached). I’ve never liked leashes on my rods while actively casting, but they work well if trolling.
Yes , tethers/leashes are rather cumbersome, and really only practical for stored rods (which I do use after a few accidental “deployments” when grabbing my net).
Floats like those pictured are the only practical in use safety devices I know of (but don’t use for the same reasons you mentioned, fit) I have seen some folks attach them to the top/underside of the rod (spinning v. casting rod) rather than encasing the rod blank itself, but creates a bit of aero-drag. I have also heard of folks tether floats off the handle, supposedly less cumbersome than attaching to yourself or your rig, but still potent for interference.
