Is it best to contact Shimano or is there another reliable source for parts for these? I need to find the handle as it’s missing on this.

You can try and contact Shimano but I doubt they have handles for models this old. Best bet is probably eBay. I’m not sure if a newer model handle would work or not.
An aftermarket handle like a Gomexus might fit as well but I doubt they’ve tested compatibility with a model this old so you’d probably have to buy and try it. Be sure to buy from someone with free returns if you go this route.
