Bought my first surf rod, how did I do? planing on throwing hi-lows and other bait rigs
The real is a penn spinfisher 704 and the rod is a ugly stik bigwater 10ft med heavy

That reel brings back fond memories. It’s a workhorse and pretty legendary in terms of longevity. Performance-wise it’s lacking compared to modern reels but you aren’t going to miss out on much if you are just throwing bait.

I bought my green 704 in ‘ 72 and bust it out every once in awhile . Still works good . Just be careful when you cast . If you put abit of muscle behind the cast the bail my flip over on you and your rig or lure will pop off . The old timers used a rubber band attached to the bail and anchored it some where to keep the bail from closing prematurely but i never did that so i dont know where the anchor point would be . Also keep the roller on the bail clean and lubricated .
