Out here at OBX first time surf fishing and I can’t figure what I’m doing wrong! Yesterday I used shrimp, today I’m on finger mullets. Hoping for some red drum but at this point anything that’ll bite. Any tips appreciated. How do I know when a fish has bit and it’s time to reel it in?

  1. Personal_Rip_145 on

Hook is massive, and your target surf species generally consist of pompano and whiting, if OBX reds in the surf but hook still too large

  2. I use 1/0 circle hooks for anything that bites. If you want reds you might want to use live shrimp or catch fresh bait. Shrimp is hit or miss because of bait stealers (especially frozen shrimp) squid usually lasts longer on the hook and you can cut it up any size you want without it falling apart.
