I primarily fly fish but almost everytime I spin fish this happens to me. I have two spinning rod/reel combos and it happens on both. I usually cluelessly mess around with cutting/pulling out more line until I stumble into fixing the problem (or at least until it seems like I have).

What is happening and how do I fix and avoid it?

For reference, in the first pic the line coming off the spool seems to go directly into the bottom of the spool, I’m holding the remainder of the line in my fingers. The second picture is the opposite side of the spool and the line coming out of the spool has an end to it – I assume it’s the end of the line from the first pic but I’ve cut it and messed with it enough that I’m really not sure…

  1. As a person who uses a ten dollar rod, this will take at least ten minutes to fix every time and I have nearly just drowned myself after having it happen

  2. The line has wrapped around the spindle that holds the spool. If you completely unscrew the drag nut you can pull the spool off the spindle, unwrap the line, then put it back on.

  3. Frosty-Ratio-776 on

When you cast keep a hand or finger very loosely on your line. Right when it hits the water clamp down on the line and close your bale with your hand. Then pull a bit to make sure the lines Is in The right place and start reeling .It used to happen to me a lot until I started controlling my line.
