Bought a new rod/reel
Combo on fb marketplace Penn fierce reel and the rod is Berkeley AmP says extreme sensitivity. Line is 6lb it’s not braid not fully sure what it is.

It’s super light and I was bombing it
Across the lake versus my normal rod and getting lots of
Strikes on my chadderbait. Problem was I was constantly losing the fish after 5-10
Seconds. I don’t usually have this issue or honestly think about it. Should I switch out the line or would this rod be better sorted for wacky/ Ned rig.

My usual rid is a ugly stick gx2.

Hopefully I can still
Find some use for this.

  1. Your not getting enough hook penetration and too much stretch in the line. If you like the rod switch over to a braid and it will reduce stretch and help with hook ups

  2. Set the hook. You won’t lose it once the barb is in. Are you just reeling in and never setting the hook? Bass Chatterbaits use huge 4/0 heavy wire hooks there’s no way you’re losing it if you’re setting the hook.

Also you shouldn’t be using 6lb braid on chatterbaits unless you’re using a light rod with a 1/8 oz bfs chatterbait.

For a 3/8-1/2 oz chatterbait you need a medium to medium heavy rod. Moderate fast to fast action. 10-15lb test fluoro, or 15-20lb test braid.

Drag should be set to 1/3 the rating of whatever line you are using. 15lb line means 5lb test drag.

Use thinner hooks. Those penetrate way better and definitely catches you more fish.

  4. Nothing wrong with the rod. I have a couple of Penn combos – a fierce and a pursuit – both are meat sticks!

There could be a lot of reasons, I’ll name few of them. drag is too tight; hook is too small (too big); reaction to the strike is too slow (too fast); rod action isn’t matching your target fish etc…

  6. Chatterbaits have large hooks which require a line with higher strength than 6lb like to slam the hook. You would be better off using lures with finer gauge hooks

I use a Heavy Power rod with a slow action for 1/2 oz chatterbaits and up with 15lb big game mono. You need the backbone to set the hook, but a lot of give to not lose the fish. The Ugly Stik rod is better suited for chatterbaits since it’s parabolic.

As my grandpa always told me ” Pretend moby dick is on the end of your rod every time when you set the hook because one day, he very well might be and you’ll starve to death while I laugh at you. ”

That next bluegill never stood a chance. =D

It’s probably the drag/line. if you are use to braid this will suck bad. toss some j-braid 8lb on that and you’ll never look back – SET THAT HOOK haha.

  9. You dont need to switch to braided line; people were catching bass long before zero stretch lines were so prevalent. You need to A) use a nice fast action graphite rod that actually has some stiffness to it and can get a decent hookset instead of being a whippy little fiberglass rod from Walmart, and B) you need to set the hook like a man, not just assume the fish is gonna hook itself. I catch crappie, bass, Pike, and huge blue catfish and all I use is mono. What do I do? I ALWAYS use a fast action graphite rod, and I ALWAYS set the hook with an appropriate amount of force. BTW, sometimes that amount of force is pretty damn high. If I’m setting the hook on a blue catfish using a large hook in 25′ of water, I’m swinging that thing pretty damn hard. If I’m fishing for crappie? Not nearly as hard but still with an appropriate amount of force.
TLDR; F*can braid, just use a fast action graphite rod and set the hook like a man.
