This is my dad's old combo. It's old and it looks like the rod has been fixed before because there's glue under the plastic piece that broke off. Is there a better way to fix this other than zip ties? This is my only ultra light setup and I'd like to be able to use it.

Super glue and baking soda. Or a resin mix. Get a small file and shape it down and paint it after it sets.
Theres probably better ways I dont know about, but ive done similar things in the past.

If it were me, I’d remove the reel and use an epoxy to fill that space on the rod, then polish and paint it, then reattach the reel and zip tie that fucker down. My dad was really good at a lot of things, but towards the end of every project he’d get bored of it or something and it would usually look like shit. Always functional, almost never looked good tho.
Hose clamp, twist the top and bottom see how close it closes then report back. Gorilla tape has worked surprisingly well. I used it in a pinch planning to get through the day. That was 2 yrs ago. You can buy a cheerleader pole and put in thar too
Electrical tape and forget about it
Sick reel.
Zip tie that thing in.
