First time ever fishing by myself and caught this – what is it?
I’ve only ever caught catfish before – AI says it’s either a sunfish or a bluegill but I’d like to know exactly. Caught in a lake in central Illinois.

I suggest this is a pumpkinseed from a muddy body of water. I’ve caught a lot of these before and it can be hard to see the typical colors and patterns of a pumpkin seed, but there are tell tale signs of the pattern especially near the tail. It could also be a dark colored green sunfish. My money is on pumpkinseed.
Bluegill tend to have solid blue on their lower jaw and gills vs the blue streaks that carry further up the cheeks.
