How does the drag work and how do I operate the drag?

  1. The drag is a brake on the spool.

Turn the drag knob anticlockwise and you release the brake allowing the spool to turn when line is pulled. The more you loosen it, the easier it is to pull line. Turn it clockwise and you tighten up the brake, and it becomes progressively harder to pull line.

Exactly how you use it depends how you’re fishing. But the basic principle is to set the drag to allow a hard pulling fish to be able to gain a little line when it’s fighting hard so as to reduce the likelihood of pulling the hook or breaking the line.
