I threw it out. Reeled it in a few times, then a sweep motion and let it sit for a moment. I got a powerful bite but I tried to hook to early and lost whatever it was. What did I do wrong or right

What line are you using? Should be fluorocarbon but regardless of line don’t wait to set the hook with treble hooks. Now setting the hook is technically just a term when retrieving a crankbait You don’t have to go to the moon just lean onto it immediately! Don’t wait that is why you lost it the fish threw it out of its mouth! Immediately.

  2. You did it right. If anything, being a beginner, you probably tried to set the hook too soon. Give a half a second and then set the hook. It’s a double edged sword because the fish could also spit the lure.

Stick with it. You’ll get it.

  3. I could be totally wrong but I suspect you didnt get bit. It’s not very common to get a big bite on a crank and miss the hookset.

The crank bait you have has way too big a bill for that body of water. I think it’s more likely that you hit structure or bottom and it felt like a bit.

I suggest getting a crank bait with a smaller bill. Your technique is fine.
