Guy at the tackle shop rigged this up or me for pike. I forgot to ask if I needed to use a metal leader with this or just tie it on directly.
I also have some thicker fluoro I could use but it just seems like the hook is far enough from the line. It’s about 12cm/5in from where I tie on.

Not an expert at all, but I’d almost want the hook on the bottom of the paddle tail. Pike could be different tho, I don’t fish much of that and would love to be educated by someone else in the comments! (: looks good tho, i never thought about putting a paddle on a spoon, cool idea

Pike do typically need a metal leader as they have sharp teeth that can cut the line. I’ve always been fine whenever I’ve hooked into one though.
Edit: If you are fishing for Esox definitely grab a steel leader. If you might find one or two targeting another species you could probably get away without one.

Despite his good intentions, this is a needlessly over-complicated contraption for pike. Yes, use a steel leader. Pike WILL bite you off otherwise.

Yes use a metal leader, that doesn’t look massive so around 20lb would be fine.

pike are head hunters. use a steel leader or heavy flouro or this will be gone soon.

I’ve caught literally hundreds of northern pike with no steel leader. From small to huge, never had one bite through a regular appropriately sized for the fish leader line. Also been fishing with a dozen or more others, nobody uses a steel leader for pike and nobody had had issues from it.

PNW here and I fish with a lot of people that exclusively go for pike;
Nobody really likes steel leaders or uses them, even in the pike fishing club. General consensus I’ve seen is that fluorocarbon anywhere from 40lb test to 80lb test works the best and is a matter of preference. I personally run 60lb
It’s super easy to tie to the main line and I would recommend an Alberto or FG knot for connecting line to leader. The FG is better but a bit more difficult, while the Alberto is a little easier and does just as well. Albright is even easier but I find it’s not nearly as clean. Blood knots are hell and I commend those who tie that way.
Let me know how that lure works, I haven’t seen a paddle tail rigged quite like that before and I’m curious to see how it performs!
