Good morning, fishing veterans and beginners. I’m looking to start fishing so I can replace my bad habit of smoking. I’m already 30 days without smoking, but I want to keep it up and I’ve always wanted to fish, but I didn’t get the chance to when I was younger. Now, I have a big boy job, and I have free time and the funds to actually buy my things for fishing.
I’m currently looking at this rod and this type of fishing line but I have no idea what I’m looking at I just like this rod because of the color/style.
It’s a bit pricey, especially for a first fishing rod, and I would greatly appreciate any advice or opinion about this rod or where I should start.

Get some reputable Daiwa, Shimano, Okuma gear instead. And try for a better braid, Sufix 832 is a big favorite and has never let me down.

(( just go to any local fishing shop, or even walmart and get any rod/spinning combo for less than 80 bucks. When you start you won’t need or use anything more than this for at least a year or two learning, getting annoyed, breaking things etc. start cheap – the fish don’t care!))
As a smoker who has cut back significantly, and also took up fishing this summer, it is not helping me quit smoking at all. On a work day, I might have 6 all day. In 3 hours of fishing, I may punch 7 or 8 darts. And one on the drive there/back.

Tons of good rod options for cheaper, but to be fair if you like a silly fun rod, go for it. My main recommendation is that if you’re just starting out I wouldn’t use braided line to avoid knotting and tangling frustrations and spool up with some monofilament or copolymer line.
I swear I saw one just like that at Walmart last night….
I got a ProFISHiency pole from Academy for my kids first pole. It’s a closed reel and have had issues with it not wanting to reel back in. It’s worth it to go with the big name brands.
