Picked up a rod and reel a couple weeks ago and been out twice for 6 or 7 hours (once on a canal, on a lake today) and the only thing that’s hit my bait is a bird that ate my bait. I’m using two maggots on a size 16 hook and a float recommended by the tackle shop near me

Anything I’m doing wrong in particular or just bad luck?

  1. Depends on what species you’re fishing for. I’ve never used maggots. You can’t go wrong with live worms. Fishing is a sport of patience and luck, so the more you get out and fish the more likely you will be to catch something. Keep trying and tight lines!

  2. Try different depths- make the distance from bobber to worm longer or shorter, fish hang out at different depths depending on factors ( lots of literature out there on this ) and often near the bottom.

  3. Try different baits, live bait/corn/bread. Try different depths with your bobber. Actually look for fish. Fish at dawn and dusk.

  4. I personally have never fished maggots, but I use red worms or night crawlers on a 2/0 circle hook with a bobber a lot and have luck with that. Then letting it for a while and reeling in every so often. If you wanted to try some soft plastics, you can never go wrong with a plastic swim bait on a jig head

I take kids fishing like scouts and cousins/friends kids and the one thing I can tell you is be patient, once you find what works and you land your first one sunny or salmon your see it’s worth it.
