My wife ended up pulling this Abu Garcia MaxPro 7’ Medium Heavy combo out of a pond yesterday. I didn’t want to leave it behind when I saw that they retail for $150. Is there a way for me to clean up the reel to get it working again?

What was is the reel. Is it seized solid?
I say take it apart, clean it and put it back together. Fresh water should just have it gummy and gross inside at most. Not a very old rod. I’ve redone at least 3 I have pulled from creeks and ponds. And at the very worst, I have a nice rod to put a reel on.
Do all the parts generally work. Drag, button to cast, reel yada yada? If yes absolutely. Clean it up and get some grease and oil.
Look up on YouTube the specific reel and how to do maintenance by stripping the gears and reapplying grease and oil.
Even if some stuff is broken you may be able to find replacement parts if you want to fix it up that bad.
This will be good practice. I fish salt and I strip my reels every winter to clean and grease.
i hope so the Abu Garcia max pro is an awesome combo!! I wish you the best of luck!
In all seriousness, I lost another pole just like that just a few days ago .. in no way is it the same pole but its still funny to me.
You should be able to disassemble it, soak it in WD40, and scrub everything that’s metal with a cheap toothbrush. Grease it when putting back together and I bet it’ll be good as new.
I pulled a spincast rod out of a pond the other day and the reel pretty much fell apart due to rust when I took the top cap off but the rod was decent after I cleaned the slime off. The baitcaster is probably built a little more corrosion proof. Nice catch.
