Terrible place to get hooked. It happened while I was getting my gear out of the back of my truck, at my favorite lake. Couldn't get it out, 1 hour drive away from a hospital. Stay safe out there. Tight lines.

  1. Oof. This happened to me once and also had to go to the doctor. Early in my career used a barbed hook and lodged under my fingernail so couldn’t get it out myself. Also on a size 22

  2. If you ever have this happen again try and find someone to put some line on the backside of the hook, press the backside of the fly/hook down and pull the line fast. It allows the barb to find the original hole and come out with minimal damage. There are many videos online. Cheers and hope it wasn’t too painful.

  3. This is the point at which many people realize that barbless hooks aren’t just for the good of the fish.

  4. Only barbless for the flies. Caught myelf in the base of the ear once with a wolly bugger when I first started and have never used a barbed fly again.
