My dad was clearing out his basement and found this combo he’s used before. Gave it to me but I don’t know anything about it. I also just started to get back into fishing since I was like 5 yrs old so I’m kind of new to all this.

Line in the water means you can catch a fish
it’s probably for ice fishing given the size assuming it’s not a youth pole

Great for free but this is a big box store rod.
It will do the job.
“Good” rods start with those from daiwa, Shimano, Penn. These brands also have high end models (especially daiwa and Shimano). Then there are custom or specialist rods from small rod makers – these can get exxy. Don’t get me started on high end fly rods ($$$$$$).
I find you can get very big jumps in performance as soon as you go pure graphite which is not very much – from there it’s just about lighter, stronger, more sensitive and (generally) faster action, as well as specialist features (e.g. slow jigging rods).
