I've caught some decent sized trout here, but lately I'm only catching smallmouth who aren't even regulation.

So I'm trying to think of a way to capitalize on the random bugs I have sneaking their way into random spots in my house.

I'm I. The northeast for what that's worth, bug-wise

Pretty good odds the fish are eating the bugs. I’d throw a float with a fly attached to the other end that matches closely to the bug population. My dad attached a 1″×1″×2″ piece of wood with a swivel screwed into both ends with the main line end shaved to a point. My main line goes to 1 end of the tappered wood end, and the leader went to the other end with my fly. I’d cast out and slowly retrieve, keeping the leader taught. This way, you can fish with your spinning gear using flies.

Look around at what bugs are currently landing in the water, and use them as a floater with thin enough line to limit visibility.

I use a baithook through the thorax (behind the “collar”), point facing towards the anterior side (belly), but not poking out of the insect if you can help it. I also don’t use a spinner for this method.

Gives you almost fly-like control over the bait. Again watch the insects around you for movement advise.
