I got a really good deal (I think) on this brand new Donyns combo, and paid 130 for the set. I was going to purchase a medium rod and a different reel but was offered this new setup and couldn’t pass it up. My only worry is that it is a heavy rod. Is that going to limit me on fishing style and bait much?

  1. Dobyns rods tend to be labeled heavier than they actually are. The rod is rated for 1/4-1oz which is pretty typical of MH rods in other brands. It’s a good all-around rod.

When looking at rods, don’t worry about the labels of H, MH, M, etc. look at the lure weight ratings.

  2. It’s heavy power but a fast action, should be just fine fishing just about any style within that 1/4 to 1oz lure weight range. It’ll be really good for topwater frogs in particular, heavy power helps with getting a powerful hook set and the fast action helps with walking the frog. The fast action is also good for detecting bites with lures that aren’t topwater. Looks like a solid setup to me, tight lines brotha 🤙
