Any ideas what kind of reel this is and what it’s used for?

I've found this online, and Alvey reels seem to be highly prized by some folks. I was wondering if anyone is familiar with this model and what it's used for –freshwater? Saltwater (that's my guess, although it appears to have a trout on it?)
