I’ve been spin fishing most of my life, but this summer I decided to pick up a fly rod and some gear and I’ve been hooked ever since (pun intended)! I was going out almost every evening after work, and even though I wasn’t catching much (besides the occasional bluegill), Ive always found I myself love flies and lures way more than bait and a bobber (probably because I don’t have much patience lol).

Today I hit up a local reservoir where the water was low enough to walk way out. I tied on a small parachute Adams and, to my surprise, started getting takes! It took me a while to figure out that I needed a much gentler hook set (these fish aren’t largemouth slapping a Rapala) and after missing about 10 strikes, I finally managed to land this guy. Snapped a quick pic before letting him go.

It feels like I’m finally turning a corner in this fly fishing journey, and I can’t wait to keep learning. If anyone has tips, I’d lo ve to hear them. I think this is a rainbow, but I still struggle with ID’ing trout, they can look so similar! Thanks again to everyone who’s shared advice on my earlier post, you’ve definitely helped me get here!

If anyone has any other tips, please let me know! I feel like I’ve come so far but still have so much more to learn. Thanks in advance!

  1. Hell yeah bro. I haven’t taken my fly rod out to make an easier pan fish catch at a local lake, been out a handful of times trying to catch trout in a river and haven’t got shit. Super excited, I enjoy how damn hard fly fishing is to make anything happen. I was so stoked to actually get a roll cast into the far deep side last week, see my indicator move so I was ticking bottom and then get snagged in an underwater log and lose 2 flies lol
