I have a Hurricane Skimmer 128 that I use for both recreational and occasional fishing. It is a thermaformed, lightweight kayak which means the plastic used is thin and more brittle than heavier rotoformed kayaks. I currently use the tube type rod holders (2) fastened to a milk crate which I keep behind the seat. This is somewhat awkward and difficult when switching rods. I usually end up just laying the extra rod in front of me between my legs. When paddling across the lake or pond, I have two rods between my legs or I have to twist around and put the rods in the tubes behind my seat. When fishing rivers I simply have to use the rod holders behind me.

Does anyone have experience installing/using a rod holder on the body of the kayak. Maybe like a YakAttack Geartrak system? I worry about the strength of the material to withstand use and slight abuse (such as running under a branch on the river). I’m assuming a backing strip/plate would help. I think I can access the underside through the 5.5” hatch to install on the sides, or the 10” hatch to install on the ‘ramp’ between my footpads.

I guess I should ask which installation point most people prefer, on the side next to or slightly behind the seat back or forward facing between the footpads.

Here’s the link to the Hurricane Skimmer 128 specs. I guess they don’t make these anymore?
