Context: A tidal river offshoot I fish at regularly has a lot of small mouth activity however I am having a hard time time consistently targeting them. In the past I’ve had sporadic success with crank and spy baits however I haven’t been able to get them to hit any stick baits, spinner baits, or rooster tails. I’m pretty bad with swim baits so I’m not too sure if this is rigged up correctly; is soft plastic on upside down? Also question on retrieves: I know I’m supposed to try and make it look like an injured minnow, so should I start/stop retrieve, yo-yo retrieve, or try hopping it off the bottom? All of the small mouth activity I see is usually surface activity, so I assume slow retrieve it to keep it near the top? Any tips would be appreciated!

Tail should face away from the hook as they could snag but from my understanding its not 100% necessary.
I personally would swap it
I always rig my curly tails tail-up. I don’t think it really matters though.
