I caught these 3 within my first month fishing. I usually get more largemouth, but these smallies are bigger on average so I wanted to share. I’ve noticed they like windblown areas and subtle changes around rocks (chunk to gravel, etc.), and I’ve had luck on tubes, jigs, spinners, ned rigs, dropshots, and wacky rigs.

Thing is, my buddy always catches one more than me every trip (8+ hrs, usually 1 fish each), and he never lets me forget it. They seem most active in low light, but I want a better understanding of where to look and how to approach them in a lake-like reservoir in NY (pics after #3). Any tips are appreciated, thanks a lot!

TL;DR: I can catch smallmouth but only about 1 a trip — looking for better spots/approaches in a NY reservoir.

I’ve been skunked the last three times. It happens. Bank fishing makes it more difficult as you are limited to set areas.

Just have to grind it out

That looks like the kinda spot where most of the fish are hiding under the rocks vs just swimming about. Maybe that’s the case.

Lost the biggest one of the entire season, not 1 hour ago. Lost another probably 10 minutes after. Think of the bright side. At least you have smallies available to catch at all near you.

  4. The shore is tough sometimes. The biggest factor for me is staying in the same spot when I shore fished. But hey, 1 a trip is good!

If you can catch a fish every time you bank fish you’re doing pretty damn good. I’ve been to the same spot two days in a row and one day catch 10 and the next 0.
