I’ve been looking at this for a while now and it’s currently like 87 bucks but when I saw it the first time it was more like 65 bucks I am also waiting for it to go back down (I am going to buy it either way)

There are hundreds of threads with recommendations. Try the search feature in the sub. This will get you started but not much more.

  2. I have this set up. I will say the max catch kit is better. This is ok I caught 10+ trout over 2 days with this set up at beavers bend state park.

It gets the job done. You will out grow this fast.

  3. I think you can do better for slightly more but honestly anything to get you into the sport. But don’t let cheap gear ruin the experience, it can happen quickly and easily. Good luck on your journey, most people in the thread are here to help. Most.

  4. My buddy fished this setup for over a year, still uses it in some applications. Great starter rig.

  5. If that’s your budget then that’s our budget – just realize you are getting exactly what you paid $80 for & it might be a bummer.

  6. My buddy was getting into fly fishing a few years back and I found home a decent Sage rod on Craigslist with a reel for under $100. If you can’t wait go for it but I’d keep an eye on the used market

I use this kit every day. Got it for my birthday last year.

I live in texas, so i fish for bass/bluegill, and thus is more that sufficient. Its a good combo to start on, though the flies/tippet it comes with are trash. The fly line will last a year or two with good treatment. My line still floats great and isnt cracking yet.

I catch more trout than everyone in this sub on my $50 dollar spinning rod and $50 reel.

If it’s in your budget, do it. I’ve caught a ton of fish on rigs that are much worse than this. The gear quality doesn’t really matter until you get into specific fisheries, in my opinion. Sure, nicer rods and lines allow you to better direct casts, but you can figure it out with cheap gear as well. Don’t listen to the clowns that tell you to buy insanely expensive gear.

  10. If you’re looking at inexpensive try the Maxcatch premier or Maxcatch extreme. I have a super cheap 8 weight I bought from the same company you pictured it’s surprisingly decent.

  11. I bought a 50$ combo for Father’s Day online at Bass Pro. I’ve never regretted getting something that gets me out on the water. You could save for a great started kit, but you could also save until you can buy $2000 rod and $300 reel and so on. But, life’s never guaranteed, if it’s what you’re willing to spend right now, go for it!

  12. It will work. My first 4 wt reel was one of these. If you just want to get on the water cheap, go for it. Just go in knowing that before long you will want to upgrade.

  13. It’s the fisherman not the gear…if that’s your budget then absolutely. You don’t need to break the bank to catch fish and if you are new to the game you shouldn’t spend a ton of money. It might not be the best quality but it will get you going just fine

  14. I started with the $100 wildwater 9′ 5wt rod kit.

If it gets you started then grab it and enjoy. If you stick with the hobby, you will eventually upgrade rods and then the cheap one can be used as a backup or thrown to a friend who is curious about trying.

Are more expensive rods better? Yes.

But you have a pile of learning you can do on the cheap rod – enjoy it!

  15. As is, no changes/upgrades, you’re wasting your money…but instantly upgrade the line to something worth a damn and this could probably be an okay setup to get by while you save for a better one.
