Hey guys, I’ve picked up fishing fairly recently and had an old rod and reel setup in the closet I brought out to use. This setup was thrown together a while back and I don’t know if I should look into downsizing the reel or not.
I fish off the west coat shore, California Bay area and sometimes the Ocean/Surf. I target mostly Halibut and Striped Bass.
Rod: Daiwa Lateo R 96M

Reel: Shimano Vanford 5000

Thanks for any input!

Maybe slightly, but 10-50g lure weight is pretty heavy so you should be fine.
i usually fish with a 4000 reel but the vanford 5000 is the same size as the 4000, just more line capacity. plus the vanford is LIGHT as fUuUuuUuK.
the only thing i’d be ocd about is balance. on my setup, balance pivot point is right where the reel is, makes for long days casting a breeze. if its too tip heavy, i get a bit fatigued.
5000 series isn’t too bad. Before opening your link, I was expecting an 8000 or higher. If youre still unhappy, 4000s are good option. Tight lines.
