Hello everyone,
I am planning a long trip (about one year) through Latin American countries, and I would like to ask for feedback from experienced fishers regarding the gear I’ve chosen. All of the rods are travel versions.
So far, I’ve purchased two rods (Light and Heavy) and I’m still deciding on the Medium and Ultra-Light setups.
Current Setup
Light Rod
- Rod: Purelure Zero 675LS – $100 (Most people recommend the UL version 725UL, but as a beginner I preferred something more forgiving and universal.)
- Target use: rivers, lakes, and shore fishing
- Reel (planned):
- Mifine MARSHALL PRO Carbon (5.2:1, +1BB, 152 g, size 2000) – $50
- or Shimano Stradic 2500HG – $130
Heavy Rod
- Rod: Purelure Sharpen 905HF – $55
- For saltwater, large lakes, and big fish
- Reel (planned): Shimano Spheros SW (2022) – $110
Medium Rod (still deciding)
- Rod: Purelure Sharpen 805MF – $55
- A more universal option
- Reel (possible): Shimano Stradic 3500HG
Ultra-Light (planned)
- Rod: Purelure Creekdance 492UL – $55
- For small rivers
- Reel (planned): Mifine MARSHALL PRO Carbon (152 g, size 1000/2000)
My Concerns
- The Chinese reels are very lightweight and have good reviews, but I am not sure how durable they would be—especially in saltwater.
- I’m uncertain whether the rods (even though they are marked “saltwater-compatible”) will actually hold up in saltwater conditions.
-
If I pair a 500–600 g reel with the Light rod, I worry about balance and handling.
I would really appreciate advice on whether my choices make sense, and if you think I should change or upgrade anything before starting this trip. And any other advice on the needed tools and gear, thank you

Daiwa Fuego from CDM is under 90$, Shimano Nasci is another great option
