I got the Penn Battle IV 7ft rod 4000 reel combo to fish stripers off the dock on my property. I’m wondering if I can surf cast successfully with this setup as well. TIA

  1. You can essentially surf fish with any set up you want but what you’re targeting can certainly dictate what you use. I usually bring two set ups that consist of a 7’6″ and a 9′.

When I fluke/striper I’m on a rig like yours since I’m targeting the sand bars/troughs that tend to be pretty close and jigging/popping won’t tire me out.

I’ve found a 4k reel is sufficient in spool length and drag for most applications.

If you’re looking for a bit more distance but still light “enough” to jig/pop a few times, the max I’d go is 9′.

If youre looking to cast-and-soak, I’d consider a 5k+ spool with an 11′ to give you some distance and ability to handle heavier sinkers to counter act rougher surf.

  2. yah that’ll do. you wont cast as far and may miss bites further out but you can still hit fish that are close.

i am always ridiculously surprised at how close some of these fish come up to shore.

i had a striper hit just 10ft in front of me – not in front of the rod… literally 5inche sof water.

perch? sometimes swimmin around my ankles.
