So my wife and I just returned from a few days of fly fishing in the southern Appalachians. On our fishing trips we camp. Our clothes are hanging in the back seat, usually other items are there too. My truck only has a 5’7” bed and I have a tonneau cover on it. So not many choices for rod storage other than broken down and stored away. When spot-hopping I have to break down our rods and then re-rig them when we get to the next location. Some days I’m losing out on an hour or more of fishing because of the time spent rigging, breaking down, rigging, breaking down…2 rods at every stop. We discussed a rod vault BUT I’m not sure that I want to go that route. Anyhow, this afternoon I built us a 4 rod storage system for the bed of my truck. Now we can just leave our rods rigged and break them down into 2 pieces. What was taking me close to 30 minutes will now take less than 1 minute.
My tonneau cover locks and my tailgate is electric, no manual latch, can only be opened when the key fob is within a few feet of the truck.

  1. Pretty cool idea! I’m not a fly fisherman but it would still be pretty handy to have something like this when I have my waders, cooler and a bunch of other crap in the bed.

Wow great idea! Last year I snagged a Yakima rod box for a steal off OfferUp, but it’s also a pain to climb up and down and reach up to put rods in or take them out. Might have to try out something like this and see how I like it.

  3. Get a hard cover. I had two Simms dry bags with my boat bag, all my fly boxes (guide at the time so 100’s of flies), wife’s waders and boots, my waders and boots, and seven reels along with 5 Sage, Loop, and Scott rods stolen. Someone cut my soft top and helped themselves outside a bar in SW Montana. Set me back years. Only got one rod back a Scott S4S 9’6” 6 weight with a hatch 5+. Guy pawned it in Kalispell for $120.
