I got him as an alien betta but the pattern doesn’t look alien now that I compare him to photos. Is he something else?

it’s a betta, of the ugly variety.

Looks like an alien to me 🤷♀️. Maybe, has a little more of the wild coloration but still looks alien. Beautiful either way!

Looks like an alien plakat! Although, it does have some key color traits that wild betta splendens has, so maybe his family line is newer? Really pretty, regardless.

It’s a Betta imbellis wild Betta :]

Probably Betta imbellis. Looks more like full wild than an Alien to me.

Likely a Betta Smaragdina Hybrid.
Pure ones have slightly spade-shaped tailfins, the white points on his anal fins makes me think Imbellis-Smaragdina Hybrid. Their Shimmering cover can range from silver to green-blueish, while the body itself is deep dark red (with some variance in exact shade).
Overall harder to keep than ‘domestic’ Betta splendens, more sensitive to the wrong parameters and a wrong diet, temperament is even more unpredictable than ‘domestic’ B. Splendens.
