I’ve got myself a trusty lifetime tamarack and already done a few basic additions to it to make the whole experience more comfortable, I’ve even caught a few fish from the bank before.

But it seems the more I learn about fishing the more I realize I know nothing at all. I started dropshotting, downsizing my lure all the way down to a 2” grub and still just no bites

I’ve been fishing just one river ever since I got the kayak and I’ve traveled both up and downstream for about 1-1/2 miles both ways and fished a lot of water, mainly bc I try to go out about twice a week.

I’m also not targeting any certain species, I’d take the tiniest bluegill there is, right as soon as I can land one.

What would you do?

  1. If in the US, what state? I see the lizard you have rigged, so I’m assuming you’re going for bass of some sort.

With fall approaching fish will be on the feed. Try some moving baits to find active fish. Your water clarity looks pretty low so maybe a spinnerbait with a little thump to it, bright colored squarebill, topwaters like a buzzbait or whopper plopper, etc.

Once you locate some fish, then you might try to slow down and thoroughly fish the area with a jig, dropshot, etc.

  2. We’ve all been there dude.. I wish I had an answer, a guy in a yak 15′ from you could cast the same rig and catch a fish.. sometimes its just the fish, not you.

I would recommend checking weather conditions and season. Keep an eye on barometric pressure, and do some reading on how fish react to it in your geographic location. Also depending on the season, if this is a river/creek near or far from a lake, it will determine where they are possibly spawning or completely absent. Does this river flow steady? Maybe there’s only big cats in there and you need some stink bait.

One thing I’ve learned about animals (fishing and hunting) you will always hear stories from ppl about “this ONE thing works and its always true!” Bullshit. There are factors that will increase your odds, but at the end of the day the animals are gona do random shit.

Keep at it and enjoy your time on the yak! Don’t forget to keep your life jacket on and have fun.
