Casual surf fishing, tired of needing to put new mono on my reels every year. What do we think about braids?

I go surf fishing two to three times per year. If I don't put new line on every year I get tangles all the time, regardless of swivels/rig type. I know, because I used to live closer to the beach and I went one to two times per month, that once a year line replacent is expected for mono. But since I'm only using it twice between changes, I'm wondering if I can get a better value by spending a little more and getting a braid. I only fish the east coast from Hatteras to Sandy Hook, if that matters.
