Hey y'all! I just bought my first bait caster and had a few questions.. been watching videos and practicing a bit with it, but I just can't get it to cast very far yet. But my main questions.. would I be better off switching to a braid instead of mono? I currently have 20lb trilene on it. And then the other question is, will a lighter lure be easier to learn with over a heavier one? Or does it really matter? Any tips and advice are very appreciated!

Heavy lures are better to learn with, 20lb mono is fine.

Keep at it and you’ll get better in no time, I used to bird’s-nest nonstop, now I can cast 3/16 like it ain’t no thang.

  2. Distance comes with practice. Practice not backlashing and get comfortable with using the baitcasters. When your comfortable start lowering your breaks and your distance will increase. line type is up to you while mono isn’t the best it gets the job done albeit a little more difficult than braid due to memory. Be patient don’t yank out backlashes calmly and nicely untangle the birdsnest.

  3. you can try braid, but the backlash will suck.

others will have opinions but u can try this:

switch to 12lb mono, tie a 1/2 oz sinker on the end. set the reels brake to max, adjust the casting control knob so that the 1/2 oz sinker drops at a speed rate where when it to touches the ground, the spool also stops rolling. u dont want too much tension on the knob that it slows the cast down, nor too little that the spoil can backlash.

practice casting with that and if things go well, reduce the reel brake.

also practice your thumbing technique. if your thumbing is really good, you can reduce the tension on the control knob further.

  4. Need to match the line rating of that caster and get you some plug testers from bass pro and toss it around in the front or back yard.. can handle the birdnests in private lol
