  1. Probably fine. Sponge filters will almost always disrupt the very top of the water, my bettas have never had an issue

    Bettas should be able to swim anywhere in the tank without being pushed around. They’re used to slow-moving/calm water. I’d be worried about exhaustion, but that’s just my opinion. You can get an airflow valve to control the flow.

  3. Yes. Sponge filters by design will agitate the surface, but not to **this** extent for a betta. You won’t even be able to properly feed a betta.

    Get a control valve.
