I got my betta last Tuesday, my tank is at school bc he is technically a school-year long project that I grew quite attached to very quickly. And I had a 5 day weekend Friday-Tuesday.

He was fine Thursday afternoon when I left school swimming around, no pineconing and his fins were in good condition since he was from petco. Nitrates, nitrites, ammonia, ph were all perfect when I tested them one last time before leaving school last Thursday. And today everything was perfect again! But I found my betta, no pigmentation, a head and partly an eaten body thanks to the ghost shrimp.

I’m devastated and I don’t know what I did wrong, I made sure he had food with an automatic feeder and my teacher came in Monday+ Tuesday to make sure they were getting food.

What could have caused his death? Was it something on my end or was it simply something out of my control? I’m genuinely so sad, and slightly jealous bc nobody else in the class has had deaths.

I will be getting a new betta from a reputable breeder, please drop any reputable breeders that are located in the us, preferably near Tx.

He was in a 10 gal long, heavy-ish? planted with real plants.
This was the first pet I’ve ever completely bought supplies for with my own money.

I did bury the little guy in my backyard when I got home and gave him a little grave.

  1. For got to add he does have a filter! And a heater the water temp was 78F
I had the tank sept 22, my teacher only let us cycle for abt a week since are final exam is based on it.
I fed fluval bug bite flakes,
the only tank mates were five ghost shrimp and two nerite snails

  2. I’m new to this, but i know they’re overbred. It’s likely it just lived its lifespan?

that is honestly such a gorgeous tank especially for a school. i know a lot of schools don’t know how to take care of him. i’m so sorry you lost him but he lived in a beautiful happy environment while he was here.

Aww I’m sorry. Since the parameters were good I’m assuming 0 ammonia, 0 nitrite, 5 nitrate? Could it have been the automatic feeder? Do you know how much food it’s dumping?

  5. The shrimp still being alive makes me think this isn’t your fault. If it was a problem with the water I’d assume the shrimp would have also died, especially considering how quickly the betta (normally fairly hardy fish) passed.

Unless the fish somehow died of an injury in a wedged spot we can’t see, I don’t see this as something you could have prevented. Sorry for your loss 🙁

  6. I’ve had a Betta for a week….died. Got new betta that weekend…. Had it for 3 years…..sometimes they just….die
