Got this bad boy for $10 at a yard sale, any recommendations for rod pairings or does it not matter? I’m still pretty new to Fly fishing. Is this considered a good reel? I looked it up and saw a few mixed reviews. Thanks!

  1. Generally, when shopping for fly fishing gear, it’s a good idea to start with the type of fishing you’re planning on doing and figure out the weight of the rod that’s appropriate for it and buy everything else according to that weight of rod. That said, if you’re just looking for something to pair with your new toy, I’d get an Eagle Claw Featherlight in the 7ft or 8ft model. It’s cheap, it’s a fun little rod, and it’s fiberglass so a bit heavier and can balance that hefty reel better. The 7ft version casts best with a 6wt line.

That is hefty reel. It’s meant for up to an 8wt rod. Not sure what the line on it is but I’m assuming it’s also close to 8wt.
