tl;dr – Got some fly gear from my brother. Never fly fished before. Would appreciate your input on the rods and reels, and what a good pairing would be to get started.
Hello all,
I'm hoping to get some input from the community concerning some gear that came into my possession about a decade ago after my brother moved away. Back in the day he was an avid fisherman, and I know he wasn't shy about opening his wallet when shopping for gear.
The rods and reels are ~20 years old at this point, but from what I've gathered were considered top quality at the time. The rods are pristine, and other than some small scuffs/signs of use, the reels are in sound condition.
When it comes to myself, other than fishing in my youth, I'm pretty new to angling. Using a pretty beginner spinning set (7' Ugly Stik Elite combo) I caught quite a lot of bass at my sister's cabin in the interior this past summer, and have been fishing for salmon and trout in the Vancouver since.
Next on the todo list is fly fishing.
The goods…
Rods:
– Sage, XP696, #6, 9'6", 3 13/16 oz
– St. Croix, PF9056, 9', 5/6wt
– G Loomis, FR1205, 10', #5 line, demo model
– Scott STS905, A Line, 9', 2.8 oz, demo model
– Winston Ascent, 590-4, 3.8 oz
Reels:
– Bauer LM2
– Merit MR-4600
– Cimarron C1 + 1x spare spool
– Dragonfly Cartridge 355 (bfr) + 2x spare spool
I'd appreciate you guys sharing some feedback on these rods/reels, and if you could recommend a pairing that would be good to get started with.
On the reels are miscellaneous backing, fly line (floating and sinking), and leaders/tippet. I know mono and fluro tend to breakdown over time and should be replaced, but is the same true with fly line?
Past that, when it comes to techniques and flies that seems like a whole other polystyrene container of night crawlers, and I'm sure I'll find a million other posts that can help me out there.
Thank you in advance for any feedback, and I'm sorry for this being such a long post.
