Caught about 10 minutes apart. First one is clearly a largemouth, but from the color of the second one it looks more like a smallmouth. However, I do believe the jaw extends behind the eye (although it is hard to tell feom the picture with the mouth open.) Furthermore, I think I see a faint dark line in the middle and the eye doesn't look like a smallmouth. Would love some input.

Both are large mouth. You’ll find they have a wide coloration spectrum.
Nice catches! Identifying bass apart of the black bass family can be tricky. To me, they both look like largemouth. There can be slight variations in pigmentation in largies, depending on exposure to sunlight. I’ve only caught spotted bass and largemouth so I could be wrong. Not a smallie tho.
