My neighbor asked me to watch their fish for a few days. I don’t know them super well so I don’t know how they would react. But they put him in this small bowl with nothing else. I know they need at least 5 gallons, plants, a filter and such.

I don’t want to overstep my place here since I’m just babysitting but I can’t help but feel bad for it.

  1. If you have your own tanks and know some aquascaping anyways, you can tell them truthfully that it’s a hobby of yours and ask if you can upgrade him to something that will make him truly shine.

As much as this bowl infuriates me, doing anything that wasn’t part of the babysitting agreement, without the consent of the owners would be overstepping and you’d risk them reversing your beneficial changes if they are against it in the first place – wich would help noone in this scenario.

  2. Replacing it without permission would definitely be overstepping and is not likely to go well. The better option would be to politely educate them (and tell them it’ll look nicer in case they’re in the “it’s just a fish” camp). If you have resources or spare equipment you could offer it to them, but it is – unfortunately in this case – ultimately their property and their choice

Yeh I agree you should ask them, if they ask why then you can explain why, they maybe just don’t know any better (they should if they are keeping a betta) also remember it ain’t just the tank, its substrate/gravel, plants (need to be real cause plastic ones have sharp edges which can tear fins) heater, filter, other decor) it very soon mounts up, the tank is the cheap bit!
